Air Canada has announced that its operations in Québec City will become the first station in Canada to fully electrify all major categories of its ground support equipment (GSE) by the end of 2025.
This milestone will mark a complete shift from fossil fuel-powered equipment to electric alternatives, covering baggage and ramp tractors, belt loaders, power stows, container loaders, and aircraft tractors.
Michael Rousseau, Air Canada’s President and CEO, highlighted that the initiative aligns with Earth Month 2025's focus on renewable energy and leverages Québec’s hydroelectric power. He emphasized the successful collaboration with the YQB airport authority in developing the necessary infrastructure to support a zero direct emission electric GSE fleet.
He added that achieving a clean energy transition in aviation requires collective efforts from manufacturers, suppliers, airports, and governments. As Canada’s flag carrier, Air Canada is committed to leading this long-term shift.
YQB President and CEO Stéphane Poirier stated that this move significantly reduces environmental impact and reflects the airport’s commitment to supporting its airline partners in achieving GHG reduction goals.
Québec City Mayor Bruno Marchand also praised the initiative, calling it a testament to the city's commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Over recent years, Air Canada has been replacing older fossil fuel-powered GSE across Canada with more efficient electric units. The airline now operates over 900 pieces of electric GSE, representing 35% of its national fleet.
