Dnata Catering & Retail: Redefining Airline Catering Standards

Despite the World Health Organization declaring the end of the global pandemic in May 2023, ground handlers continue to face budget constraints. Nevertheless, dnata Catering & Retail remains committed to its catering truck replacement strategy, prioritizing safety and operational efficiency even in a challenging environment.

The post-pandemic landscape has brought additional hurdles, including persistent global supply chain disruptions. These issues have led to extended lead times for ground support equipment (GSE) deliveries, creating operational challenges for airside operators. Fayaz Haq, Global Head of Supply Chain at dnata Catering & Retail, explains, “Longer lead times across the supply chain can delay project timelines and affect operational efficiency. However, our truck replacement program remains a critical investment, requiring additional planning to mitigate supply chain risks and adapt to these delays.”

As part of its strategy, dnata is upgrading its fleet to meet higher safety and efficiency standards. The company has developed global specifications focusing on these key areas. Haq elaborates, “Beyond standard operating procedures, our requirements include optimized cooling efficiency through insulated walls and roofs, operator compartments with pneumatic sliding doors for safety, full compliance with IATA AHM 913 standards, and 360-degree camera systems.”

In addition to these upgrades, dnata is exploring new technologies to enhance its operations. With ground handlers increasingly seeking advanced GSE solutions, such as those equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous capabilities, dnata is also focusing on integrating telematics and IoT (Internet of Things) data. These technologies are vital for improving total cost of ownership (TCO) modeling and operational efficiency.

Training is another critical component of dnata’s strategy. Haq emphasizes the importance of a digital virtual reality training package that covers airport regulations, crisis simulations, and autonomous driving technology. “This ensures our drivers and operators stay up to date with the latest requirements and technologies, particularly when catering trucks enter equipment restraint areas,” he says. Such measures not only enhance safety but also contribute to overall operational efficiency.

Despite the ongoing challenges, dnata’s commitment to innovation and investment in its fleet underscores its dedication to maintaining high standards in airline catering operations. By addressing supply chain disruptions, adopting new technologies, and prioritizing training, dnata is positioning itself to navigate the complexities of the post-pandemic aviation industry.
