Hactl (Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited) is integrating autonomous Ground Support Equipment (GSE) as part of its long-term operational strategy. CEO Wilson Kwong highlights the company’s collaboration with partners to develop fully autonomous ramp operations, expressing confidence in the potential of driverless vehicles in cargo handling.
Kwong emphasizes that autonomous GSE can operate 24/7, minimizing labor requirements and improving service stability, especially in challenging weather conditions. He notes that automation can help address staffing shortages, as ramp work is often seen as less desirable due to long commutes, shift work, and outdoor conditions. Additionally, reducing reliance on manual driving could mitigate safety risks linked to driver fatigue.
While autonomous technology is already capable of replacing manual vehicle operations, Hactl still faces challenges in achieving a fully driverless system. Tasks such as pushing ULDs from dollies onto loaders and setting up stoppers on dollies require additional automation solutions. Furthermore, operating in aviation-restricted zones demands stringent security and safety measures, necessitating a balance between efficiency and regulatory compliance.
Kwong remains optimistic about the future of autonomous GSE, expecting continuous advancements in technology to refine operations and enhance safety in cargo handling.
