The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has introduced updates to several key aviation manuals, ensuring alignment with evolving industry regulations, operator and state-specific variations, and best practices in cargo and ground operations.
The latest updates impact the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), Battery Shipping Regulations (BSR), Live Animal Regulations (LAR), Airport Handling Manual (AHM), and Compassionate Transportation Manual (CTM). These changes address advancements in safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency across the industry.
The Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) now include 10 new classifications, such as sodium-ion batteries and fire suppressant dispersing devices. Additionally, three new entries have been added for battery-powered vehicles, along with enhanced safety measures related to the State of Charge for shipped batteries.
The Battery Shipping Regulations (BSR) have expanded to cover additional battery types, including sodium-ion batteries with organic electrolyte, wet spillable batteries filled with acid or alkali, and non-spillable lightly regulated batteries.
Revisions to the Live Animal Regulations (LAR) focus on improving transport container specifications and updating references to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) species database.
The Airport Handling Manual (AHM) now incorporates policies on managing unruly passengers, implementing contactless travel procedures, and verifying travel documents. Additionally, it includes references to IATA’s Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) for environmental management and updates related to the IATA Training Passport for skills recognition.
The Compassionate Transportation Manual (CTM) has been revised to include best practices for handling human and animal remains, checklists for repatriation procedures, and references to Cargo iQ and ONE Record for enhanced cargo tracking and logistics efficiency.
IATA has made detailed information on the revised manuals available through its official channels, alongside reports on developments in dangerous goods, special cargo, cargo operations, and ground handling.
Frederic Leger, Senior Vice President of Commercial Products and Services at IATA, stated:
"This year’s IATA manual updates include over 350 changes, many of which reflect advancements in technology, regulatory updates, and evolving customer needs, while supporting the industry’s priorities of digitalization and sustainability."
