AtkinsRéalis Group Inc., a leading engineering services and nuclear company, has been awarded a Project Management Support Services contract by the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to oversee its Airfield Improvement Programme (2024-2029 Phase). The agreement, signed with the City and County of the San Francisco Airport Commission, will enhance airfield safety, infrastructure resilience, and capacity to meet growing demand in the Bay Area.
Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRéalis, emphasized the company’s expertise in delivering runway, taxiway, and terminal projects for major global airports, ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable air travel. Under the contract, AtkinsRéalis will provide program management, design oversight, construction supervision, quality control, and stakeholder coordination for critical upgrades, including runway reconstruction and taxiway rehabilitation.
Steve Morriss, President of U.S., Latin America, and Minerals & Metals at AtkinsRéalis, highlighted the firm’s proven track record in managing complex airfield projects at 15 of the busiest U.S. airports and seven of the world’s top 10 airports. The team’s ability to minimize disruptions while executing large-scale improvements in land-constrained environments was a key factor in securing the contract.
SFO, the 13th busiest U.S. airport and Best Airport in North America (2023), served over 50 million passengers last year—a 35% increase from 2022. The airfield upgrades are part of SFO’s $11 billion Capital Improvement Plan, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
