Birmingham Airport (BHX) is enhancing its assisted travel services through a £3.8 million investment in a new fleet of dedicated ambulifts. Over the next 10 months, the airport will introduce 12 new THUNDERLIFT 6000 vehicles, manufactured by the leading aviation ground equipment company AVIOGEI.
The modern ambulifts are designed to improve the passenger experience for travellers with disabilities or reduced mobility. Key benefits include shorter waiting times, increased comfort, and smoother transitions to and from the aircraft. The vehicles are compatible with all aircraft types operating at BHX.
This initiative is part of the airport’s ongoing effort to upgrade its assisted travel services, which also includes the appointment of Wilson James as the designated Assisted Travel provider in March 2025. The company brings over 30 years of aviation industry experience to the role.

The full fleet is expected to be in operation by the end of summer 2026.
