Edmonton International Airport is set to become Canada’s first airport to trial DTI’s hydrogen-diesel technology on its runway snow sweepers, with funding support from Alberta Innovates.
Aimed at cutting ground operation emissions, advancing hydrogen use and boosting aviation sustainability, the sweepers will get DTI’s Guardian System. This lets Tier 3 diesel engines use hydrogen as supplementary fuel, slashing greenhouse gas emissions without major infrastructure changes.
The project will address Tier 3 engines’ challenges (high-load operations, dual-engine complexity). Retrofits start this spring and take about a year.
Peter Agnew of Edmonton International Airport said: “Cutting ground fleet emissions, especially from winter-ready snow sweepers, is key to sustainability. Hydrogen-diesel tech offers an innovative decarbonization path, and we’re eager to showcase hydrogen’s value at YEG.”
Rebecca Goldsack of DTI added: “Airports are vital global hubs, making this trial a major demonstration of hydrogen’s potential in high-demand settings. Success will show hydrogen can transform off-road operations worldwide, proving sustainability and efficiency coexist.”
