The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has secured a $16.5 million contract to purchase uAvionix VTU-20 ADS-B Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters (VMAT), covering equipment installation and ongoing maintenance services. These devices will be fitted on all FAA service vehicles nationwide, representing a major upgrade to the authority’s airport surface safety programs under the Surface Awareness Initiative. The move enables 2,000 key airport operation vehicles to be tracked in real time, filling long-standing ground traffic visibility loopholes at over 250 equipped airports.
Complex and fast-paced airport operations, harsh weather conditions and urgent field tasks often force ground vehicles to travel close to active runways with poor sightlines, greatly raising risks of runway conflicts and near-collisions. Recent serious runway accidents have drawn wide attention to the hidden dangers of untracked ground vehicles, as insufficient real-time vehicle location information severely weakens the situational judgment of pilots and air traffic controllers.
The FAA-certified uAvionix VTU-20 system can be quickly installed on various service vehicles and transmit accurate real-time positioning data to air traffic control, aircraft and other connected vehicles. Company official Cyriel Kronenburg stated that enabling real-time visibility equal to aircraft for all airport ground vehicles will greatly improve overall operational safety, and this large-scale procurement fully demonstrates the FAA’s resolve to adopt efficient and scalable technical solutions to avoid airport traffic safety incidents.
