Finnish airport operator Finavia has reached net zero carbon emissions for operations under its control at Helsinki Airport, as verified by the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme. Since 2011, Finavia has participated in ACA, which requires airports to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 90% and commit to net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050 to attain the highest Level 5 certification.
Globally, only around 20 airports hold this distinction, with five operated by Finavia. “This achievement reflects our ambitious climate goals,” said Kirsi Pitkäranta, Finavia’s VP of Sustainability. Emissions at Helsinki Airport primarily come from energy use in infrastructure, including lighting, heating, ventilation, and ground vehicles. By transitioning entirely to renewable or CO₂-free energy, Finavia has minimized emissions to the lowest feasible level.
Helsinki Airport first achieved carbon neutrality in 2017, but net zero represents a more significant milestone. In 2023, Finavia’s airports in Ivalo, Kittilä, Kuusamo, and Rovaniemi also reached Level 5. The company aims for all 20 of its airports to achieve net zero by 2025.
