Dudleys Consulting Engineers, the winner of the "Yorkshire Consultancy of the Year" award, has recently been entrusted by Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) to provide inspection services for the airport's radar tower and other key infrastructure. This collaboration is an extension of Dudleys' involvement in the second phase of LBA's £100 million terminal upgrade project, continuing their partnership of over 15 years.
The 30-foot-high radar tower at LBA is a core facility for air traffic control, covering a range of 40 nautical miles and up to 10,000 feet. The advanced equipment it houses is directly related to airspace management and flight safety. Dudleys' inspection services will ensure the stable operation of these facilities.
As a long-term partner of LBA, Dudleys' services have covered all scenarios including the airport's airside apron, building renovations, and parking lots. Since 2018, the company has been deeply involved in the terminal expansion project, facilitating the implementation of the design plan.
The first phase of the LBA terminal upgrade has been put into use. The second phase is now underway, focusing on the renovation and upgrade of the existing terminal, including the construction of a new security check hall and arrival area, as well as the improvement of facilities such as check-in counters and duty-free shops. The ultimate goal is to expand the number of parking stands and enhance operational capacity.
Andy Walker, the managing director of Dudleys, said that the company's in-depth understanding of the airport provided crucial support for the upgrade plan. He pointed out that although the functional reconstruction of the existing buildings was in line with LBA's sustainable goals, it faced considerable challenges due to the age and structural differences of the buildings.
"We are collaborating with the design team to integrate the significantly different buildings into a modern terminal," Andy Walker added. Dudleys will support the construction of new transportation facilities and their connection with the new terminal, and all the projects will be carried out under the airport's "normal operation" to minimize disruption to passengers.
This new commission is once again an endorsement of Dudleys' professional capabilities by LBA. In the future, Dudleys will continue to leverage technology to empower LBA in building an efficient and safe aviation hub.
