Schiphol Airport processes some 31,000 pieces of transfer baggage daily, with the bulk of this volume concentrated in the morning, creating strain on its baggage handling system and operations. To boost efficiency, the airport has introduced Aurrigo’s Auto-DollyTug, which is tasked with transporting luggage belonging to long-layover passengers from aircraft to temporary storage facilities. This initiative is a collaborative effort between Royal Schiphol Group and KLM.
The trial of the Auto-DollyTug kicked off in August last year. During the first phase, the autonomous vehicle mapped the platform environment via 3D cameras to enable independent navigation, and underwent step-by-step testing of functions such as autonomous container pickup and drop-off, as well as manoeuvring through the busy baggage hall. It then delivers luggage to the baggage hall at the right time for system entry and transfer to connecting flights. The next phase will involve operations on the pier, where the vehicle must navigate denser traffic; if successful, test routes will be expanded, with trials at aircraft stands scheduled by the end of this year. For safety, an operator will remain on board throughout the trial to intervene when needed.
Jan Zekveld, Senior Manager Innovation at Royal Schiphol Group, noted that the airport is dedicated to sustainable, emissions-free ground operations and aims to replace its ground fleet with a connected network of autonomous, zero-emission vehicles, which will automate related processes while shifting employees’ roles to more varied, supervisory tasks. Aurrigo International CEO Professor David Keene highlighted that the project showcases the Auto-DollyTug’s ability to enhance efficiency, ease baggage handlers’ workloads and relieve pressure on airport systems, supporting Schiphol’s vision for smarter, greener ground operations. The vehicle is outfitted with LiDAR sensors and 360-degree cameras to ensure safe navigation, timely braking and adequate distance maintenance amid other traffic.
