Swissport's latest procurement policy clearly states that starting from January this year, for luggage transportation, luggage loading conveyors, mobile boarding stairs, forklifts, waste disposal, and water supply operation vehicles, all must be purchased electrically; and it plans to achieve full electric procurement of aviation ground handling equipment (GSE) by 2027, and reach the 55% electrification target of ground handling equipment by 2032.

This policy is the core measure for Swissport to fulfill its ESG commitment and reduce carbon footprint. The company's CEO Warwick Brady said that in the next ten years, it will invest over 1 billion euros to build an electric operation fleet. This sustainable development plan will also help airlines achieve ESG goals and reduce carbon emissions in the supply chain; at the same time, he called on airports to prioritize the improvement of charging infrastructure and upgrade the power grid, and urged regulatory agencies and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to unify charging interfaces and protocols, and require airports to plan minimum standards for dedicated parking spaces for electric ground handling equipment.

Currently, Swissport has been promoting the electrification of ground handling equipment at major airports in Europe. The electrification rate at Zurich Airport is 44%, and it plans to increase it to 55% by the end of 2025; Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has invested 2.5 million euros in purchasing electric equipment and plans to achieve a full electric transformation of mobile ground handling equipment; Rome Fiumicino Airport has put 5 electric buses into use and has 7 more awaiting delivery, and Frankfurt Airport has received a ground handling service license starting from February 2025, and Swissport will invest 25 million euros in purchasing electric vehicles here.
