Three Air India narrowbody planes sustained damage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on June 7. At around 16:40 local time, strong winds and heavy rain during a storm blew a step ladder and trestles from nearby parking areas at Terminal 2. The loose ground support equipment collided with the stationary aircraft, forcing the airline to take them out of operation for checks. No one was hurt and no passengers were on board when the accident happened, and photos online show visible damage including a large hole on one jet.
Two Airbus A320 aircraft are set to resume flights shortly, while the third will stay grounded for more extensive repairs. There is a dispute over the ownership of the runaway equipment: some sources link it to Air India Engineering and IndiGo Engineering, a claim denied by IndiGo.
The sudden storm reportedly caught the airport and airlines off guard, though aviation authorities have not verified this statement. Air India has also not released an official statement detailing the full scale of the damage to its aircraft.
