Airport Show 2025 To Spotlight Electric GSE As Airports Accelerate Push Toward Carbon Neutrality by 2030

Against the backdrop of the global aviation industry accelerating the realization of sustainable development, the 24th Airport Show 2025 in Dubai will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from May 6th to 8th, highlighting cutting-edge technologies such as electric Ground service equipment (GSE). This exhibition attracted over 130 exhibitors from 22 countries, dedicated to promoting a comprehensive upgrade of airports in terms of operational efficiency, environmental performance and technological innovation.

Airports in the Middle East are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure and modern equipment construction, especially in the introduction of electric Gses. These devices not only help enhance the airport's operational capacity and profit level, but also can address the challenge of a significant increase in the number of air passengers in the coming years.

The exhibition is honorary chaired by His Royal Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Director General of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, the Chairman of Dubai Airport and the Chairman of Emirates Group. The exhibition features multiple thematic zones, among which the ground service equipment zone led by dnata has attracted much attention. There is also a zone dedicated to airport technology and design. Additionally, a series of professional events will be held, including the Global Airport Leaders Forum (GALF), the Middle East Airport Security Conference, and the Middle East Women's Aviation Conference.

As one of the key exhibitors, dnata showcased its latest generation of ground support vehicles, demonstrating its global sustainable operation strategy. dnata stated that it is phasing out diesel equipment and shifting towards electric, hybrid and hydrogen energy equipment. It has also collaborated with alternative fuel suppliers to convert all non-electric equipment in Dubai to biodiesel power. The company plans to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

Last year, dnata signed a global framework procurement agreement worth over 210 million US dollars during the exhibition, which included an investment of over 100 million US dollars for the Dubai fleet to update ground equipment. It operates 2,500 mobile Gses at the two major airports in Dubai, serving more than 190 airlines.

Other participating enterprises also brought cutting-edge technologies. The "Baggage 4.0" system launched by Vanderlande enhances the efficiency of baggage handling through data-driven and automated approaches. Eternity Technologies showcased battery solutions based on carbon nanotube technology, aiming to enhance the energy efficiency and reliability of ground handling operations.

Mai Ismail, the event director of RX Global, said, "Electric ground equipment is revolutionizing the way airports operate. It is both environmentally friendly and efficient. This market will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years." She also pointed out that advancements in battery technology and cost reduction will further promote the popularization of electric equipment at airports around the world.

Experts generally believe that electric ground equipment is more energy-efficient and emits less than traditional diesel equipment. When combined with a cloud management system, it can significantly improve the efficiency of equipment scheduling and maintenance. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) advocated for industry transformation as early as 2022, and dnata launched the "Excellence in Ground Equipment Identification Program" in 2024, encouraging global ground handling units to accelerate equipment renewal.

At present, more than 130 airports around the world have committed to achieving full carbon neutrality by 2030. It is projected that by 2029, the market size of electric ground service equipment will increase from 38,592 units in 2024 to 44,761 units, and the global market value is expected to reach 17.44 billion US dollars in 2032.
