Following nearly 5,000 trial trips, two autonomous baggage tractors have entered live operations at Changi Airport, transferring passenger bags between Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. The launch was officiated by Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling, marking Singapore’s push for smart airport technologies. Fitted with over ten sensors and cameras, the tractors navigate airside conditions safely and are remotely monitored from a control centre.
Six more autonomous tractors will be deployed between Terminal 2’s baggage handling area and aircraft stands later this year under a CAG-SATS partnership. The fleet will expand to 24 units by next year, with future plans to tow cargo and equipment. Co-funded by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), the project supports Changi Airport Group’s innovation strategy, which includes AI, automation and robotics to improve manpower productivity.
These autonomous vehicles free up staff to focus on harder-to-automate last-mile tasks, with dedicated AV zones and clear markings ensuring safety. The initiative supports Changi’s operational readiness for Terminal 5 by the mid-2030s and transforms airside job roles. Senior representatives from CAG, CAAS and SATS highlighted how the collaboration enhances safety, efficiency and service quality while helping workers transition to higher-value roles.
