Avinor Seeks Partners for Airport Hydrogen Infrastructure Deployment

Avinor has launched a multi-phase initiative to develop hydrogen infrastructure at airports, aiming to build expertise in hydrogen storage, refuelling, and distribution for ground support equipment (GSE) and future aircraft.

The project starts with a six-month feasibility study (Phase 1, launched September 2025), followed by cost development (Phase 2) and project planning/implementation (Phase 3). Preparatory work begins in autumn 2025, with testing and demonstrations scheduled from 2027. The study will address technical specifications, regulatory requirements, safety analyses, supply chains, and cost estimates for airport-based hydrogen refuelling stations.

Birgitte Johannessen, Avinor’s Hydrogen Programme Manager, emphasized the need to advance infrastructure now—well ahead of commercial hydrogen-powered aircraft—to gain critical experience. Avinor is seeking market input, including GSE and aircraft suitable for testing, and has published a Request for Information (RFI) to identify potential partners and innovators to collaborate on the test infrastructure.
