The 2026 update of IATA manuals centers on cargo, ground handling and live animal transport, with battery-related revisions taking precedence in the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and Battery Shipping Regulations (BSR). This revision is driven by a 25% year-on-year rise in air-shipped lithium batteries and overheating power bank incidents, plus the emergence of new hybrid battery chemistries. Key DGR changes include formalised shipping names for hybrid vehicles, cabin battery usage recommendations, national variations updates, standardised operator variation texts, a new battery shipper compliance checklist, and Appendix H outlining 2027 changes. BSR updates feature stricter lithium-ion battery charge limits, a matching compliance checklist, and more designated postal operators accepting battery-containing equipment. The Live Animal Regulations (LAR) are revised to boost animal welfare, covering competency-based attendant training, Brazil’s official adoption, updated animal container specifications, and revised guidelines for specific species like poultry and raptors. The IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) focuses on operational efficiency, safety and support for special-needs passengers, with updates on unaccompanied minors, unruly/inadmissible/medically-requiring passengers, Resolution 753-aligned baggage tracking, potable water handling and aircraft turnaround procedures. Digital enhancements are introduced to improve accessibility, including the LAR Verify online portal, a digital dangerous goods list and an upgraded battery classification tool covering sodium-ion batteries. IATA’s Senior Vice President of Products and Services highlighted that the updates integrate technological, digital, regulatory and customer needs to enhance operational safety, efficiency and sustainability, building on eight decades of industry-standard collaboration.
