Building on the airport’s remote-controlled vehicle trials back in April 2023, Kansai International Airport is now rolling out its first-ever Level 4 autonomous vehicle tests featuring the EZTow. This trial—conducted without an on-board operator—will run in a real-world airport setting, with the vehicle tasked to navigate confined zones like baggage return areas, while detecting and reacting to pedestrians in real time.
A collaborative effort between Peach Aviation, Panasonic Holdings, Nagase Techno Service and Kansai Airports, the initiative aims to explore how autonomous Ground Support Equipment (GSE) can cut labor costs and streamline airport operational workflows. Notably, the EZTow already supported Nagase Techno Service’s Level 3 autonomous driving tests from December 2024 to April 2025, and is now upgraded for the Level 4 trials.
According to TractEasy, this new round of testing marks a significant step forward from the 2023 remote-controlled trials, by incorporating more advanced autonomous capabilities. Looking ahead, the integration of autonomous and remote-controlled systems could pave the way for flexible fleet management solutions that can be deployed across multiple airport locations.
