At present, over 60 operational vehicles at the airport have switched from traditional diesel to biodiesel, including various types such as apron operation vehicles, security patrol vehicles, fire engines and snow removal vehicles. This transformation is attributed to the close cooperation between the airport and the biodiesel supplier YourNRG, and it aligns with the latest five-year sustainable development strategy "Co-creating a Sustainable Future" released by its parent company, Manchester Airport Group. The strategy pledges to achieve net-zero carbon operations at its three major airports - Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands - by 2038.
Since 2012, East Midlands Airport has achieved carbon neutrality and become the first airport in the UK to be recognized by the Airport Carbon Accreditation program as a carbon-neutral airport. To achieve its low-carbon goals, the airport has implemented a number of emission reduction measures, including investing in energy efficiency improvement projects, installing commercial-grade wind turbines, and fully adopting renewable energy electricity.
In the past year, the airport has added two electric "barrier-free shuttle buses" to assist passengers with mobility difficulties in boarding, and has also installed dedicated electric vehicle charging stations in the flight area. In addition, the airport has adhered to a 100% zero landfill waste disposal policy and has continuously improved the public transportation system leading to the airport with the revenue from the parking lot.
The biodiesel used this time is derived from waste vegetable oil and fat, and is converted into renewable fuel through hydrogenation technology. Compared with traditional fossil diesel, its carbon emissions throughout the life cycle can be reduced by up to 90%, and it significantly reduces particulate matter emissions. This fuel also has the characteristic of being biodegradable, making it more environmentally friendly.
Steve Griffiths, the managing director of East Midlands Airport, said: "We are constantly exploring feasible ways to reduce our environmental impact in order to meet the group's net zero carbon target by 2038. The collaboration with YourNRG to transform our ground fleet is a significant milestone, not only delivering substantial emission reduction benefits but also creating multiple environmental values."
Lee Risen, the business director of YourNRG, commented: "We are honored to be part of the decarbonization process at East Midlands Airport. By converting its operational fleet to hydrogenated vegetable oil fuel, the airport has significantly reduced emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. This clearly demonstrates that sustainable alternatives can deliver tangible benefits today and provides an immediately viable low-carbon solution for more businesses committed to achieving their climate goals."
