Announcement and Technology
EasyJet and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport have announced the rollout of electronic TaxiBot technology for Airbus aircraft. Following a successful trial in March and the first passenger flight on 30 April, the semi-robotic tractor allows planes to taxi without using main jet engines, relying only on the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).
Emissions and Efficiency Benefits
EasyJet estimates the system saves an average of 95kg of fuel and 299kg of CO₂ per flight, while reducing noise on the apron. Schiphol notes that large-scale deployment could cut taxiing fuel consumption by up to 65%, significantly lowering CO₂, NOx, and ultrafine particle emissions.
Collaboration and Future Goals
The deployment is part of Schiphol’s ambition to build a more sustainable airport and easyJet’s net zero roadmap. Executives from easyJet, Schiphol, and Menzies Aviation highlighted the initiative as a practical step toward cleaner ground operations, creating a healthier workplace through industry collaboration.
