Helsinki Airport Achieves Net-zero Carbon Balance; Finnish Airport Operator Finavia Reaches Its Target

This net-zero emission achievement has been verified through the international Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, which Finavia has been participating in since 2011. The programme has seven accreditation levels, with Level 5 being the highest. To obtain Level 5 accreditation, an airport must achieve and maintain at least a 90% absolute reduction in carbon dioxide emissions within Scope 1 and Scope 2, while committing to reach net zero in Scope 3 by 2050. Currently, more than 640 airports worldwide are participating in this programme.

Kirsi Pitkäranta, Vice President of Sustainability at Finavia, stated: "Achieving net-zero carbon emissions is an ambitious climate goal. Globally, only about 20 airports have obtained net-zero status through the Airport Carbon Accreditation, and five of them are Finavia's airports." Emissions at Helsinki Airport mainly come from energy consumption of airport infrastructure, such as apron and runway lighting, building heating and ventilation, as well as the use of vehicles and maintenance equipment. She added, "By completely switching to renewable or carbon dioxide-free energy, we have reduced carbon emissions as close to zero as technically and economically feasible."

Helsinki Airport achieved carbon neutrality in 2017, and Finavia stated that achieving net-zero emissions is an even more significant milestone for an international airport. In 2023, Finavia's airports in Ivalo, Kittilä, Kuusamo, and Rovaniemi all obtained Level 5 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation. Helsinki Airport is the fifth Finavia airport to receive the net-zero certification. Henri Hansson, Senior Vice President of Finavia in charge of airport infrastructure, sustainability, safety, security, and compliance, said: "We are extremely proud of our long-term efforts in reducing carbon emissions. We hope to contribute to reducing aviation emissions, and our goal is to have all 20 Finavia airports achieve net-zero emissions by the end of 2025."
