Goldhofer’s baggage tractor lineup includes the diesel-powered Sherpa D and the electric Sherpa E, both designed with modular configurations to meet diverse operator needs. The Sherpa D offers multiple drivetrain options, while the Sherpa E features customizable lithium-ion battery capacities to suit different operational demands. Operators can also choose between cab-less or full-cabin designs, with pull weights ranging from 4 tonnes for baggage handling to 8 tonnes for cargo operations.
Luca Köhler, Goldhofer’s product manager, highlights the company’s commitment to high-performance electric vehicles (EVs), emphasizing the use of high-voltage lithium-ion battery systems. “We provide multiple battery configurations to match varying customer requirements,” he explains.
Globally, GSE electrification is accelerating, with increasing demand for battery-powered equipment. Currently, Goldhofer reports a 50/50 split between diesel and electric tractor demand, though this varies by region. In Europe, where many airports aim for net-zero emissions, operators are rapidly transitioning to electric fleets. Köhler predicts a 70/30 shift toward electric models in the coming years, driven by sustainability targets.
However, adoption rates differ by market. While some regions, like the Middle East, show growing interest in electric GSE, infrastructure limitations remain a challenge. Nevertheless, with stricter environmental regulations and long fleet lifespans (10-20 years), operators aiming for 2030-2035 net-zero goals are increasingly opting for battery-powered solutions.
