IATA Releases 2025 Updated Versions of Cargo And Ground Handling Manuals

IATA has updated its 2025 cargo and ground handling manuals to align with evolving industry standards, operator practices, and regulatory requirements. The revisions cover core documents including the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), Battery Shipping Regulations (BSR), Live Animal Regulations (LAR), Airport Handling Manual (AHM), and Compassionate Transportation Manual (CTM), with supplementary reports and details accessible via a dedicated channel.

Key updates span multiple critical areas: the DGR adds 10 new dangerous goods categories (e.g., sodium-ion batteries, fire suppressant dispersing devices) and tightens battery shipping safety rules by specifying state-of-charge limits; lithium battery regulations are reclassified under BSR to cover expanded battery types like organic electrolyte sodium-ion batteries and wet spillable batteries. Meanwhile, the LAR updates animal transport container specs and integrates CITES and IUCN species database references; the AHM incorporates contactless travel protocols, unruly passenger policies, IEnvA environmental management guidelines, and revised IATA Training Passport standards; the CTM introduces new best practices and checklists for repatriating human and animal remains, plus Cargo iQ and ONE Record references.

Frederic Leger, IATA Senior Vice President of Commercial Products and Services, noted that the manuals include over 350 changes, reflecting technological modernization, shifting customer demands, and the industry’s focus on digitalisation and sustainability. To support these updates, IATA’s ONE Source platform provides free industry access to verify aviation capabilities and infrastructure, enhancing the safe and efficient handling of special cargo shipments.
