Kenya Airways Teams Up with FedEx To Grow Nairobi Cargo Business

Kenya Airways has sealed a strategic cooperation deal with FedEx to undertake the logistics giant’s cargo handling workflows at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), a key initiative to cement Nairobi’s status as a core freight hub across Africa.

Per the newly signed pact, the national carrier will deliver professional ground handling services via its wholly-owned subsidiary Kenya Airfreight Handling Limited (KAHL). The firm is the official operator of on-site cargo management and warehousing facilities at Nairobi’s flagship international airport. The joint service portfolio encompasses inbound imports, outbound exports and cross-border transit cargo, alongside niche high-value freight categories. Specially controlled shipments covered in the deal include pharmaceutical consignments, as well as temperature-controlled perishable goods namely cut flowers and fresh agricultural produce.

George Kamau, Acting Group Chief Executive of Kenya Airways, noted the landmark partnership underscores global recognition of the airline’s cross-border cargo operation expertise.“The FedEx partnership serves as solid endorsement of our capacity to deliver premium, internationally compliant aviation ground handling solutions,” Mr. Kamau commented.

He further highlighted that the alliance will consolidate Nairobi’s competitive edge as a pivotal aviation and logistics junction, linking the African continent to key trade markets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.“Against shifting global trade landscapes, we are anchoring JKIA as a core node for streamlined, dependable and unified cargo circulation throughout Africa,” the executive added.

Apart from bilateral business gains, the collaboration will back Kenya’s national logistics blueprint to build JKIA into East Africa’s top cargo consolidation and distribution hub. The plan gains greater momentum amid rising intra-regional trade driven by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.Kenya ranks among Africa’s top air cargo exporters, with horticultural goods, medical supplies and premium temperature-sensitive perishables acting as backbone export commodities for its national economy.

Notably, Kenya Airways and its Nairobi hub obtained official ISAGO (IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations) certification in 2023, the authoritative global industry accreditation verifying top-tier ground operation safety and standardized cargo handling protocols.
