Kansai International Airport has recently introduced unmanned luggage tractors supported by EasyMile technology, becoming the latest airport to adopt automated Ground Service equipment (GSE). This deployment aims to shorten the time between flight arrivals and luggage returns and enhance the efficiency of ground services.
This experimental project is carried out in the apron area of Terminal 2 and marks the first time that Kansai Airport has piloted a level 4 autonomous driving GSE. The trial was jointly advanced by Kansai Airport, Peach Aviation, Panasonic Holdings and Nagase Technical Services.
This test aims to evaluate the adaptability of the automatic tractor in the actual airport environment, including its ability to identify pedestrians, stop and start at crosswalks, and provide precise navigation in narrow Spaces such as the baggage return area. All functions are specially designed for the operational requirements of the airport.
This test is based on the remote control vehicle test in April 2023 and further introduces higher-level autonomous driving technology. In the future, by integrating autonomous driving with remote control systems, it is expected to achieve flexible fleet management and operational optimization in multiple airport scenarios.
