Menzies Aviation has bought TAP Air Portugal’s remaining 49.9% shareholding in SPdH, gaining full sole ownership of the ground handling firm, with the transaction greenlit by the Portuguese Court of Auditors.
Menzies originally acquired a controlling 50.1% stake in SPdH back in 2024, and the full takeover marks a key milestone for its long-term growth strategy in Portugal. Trading previously as Groundforce Portugal, SPdH operates ground handling and air cargo services at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal and Porto Santo Airports, processing over 100,000 aircraft movements annually for global airline partners.
Now holding 100% equity, Menzies will accelerate its local strategic rollout, with sustained focus on operational performance, safety and service quality. The group will keep investing in smart technology and its 3,500-plus local employees to lift the long-term efficiency and stability of Portugal’s airport operations.
The deal reflects Menzies’ confidence in the Portuguese aviation market and its commitment to expanding ground handling capacity to support the country’s aviation, tourism and economic development ecosystem. The company’s global Innovation Live initiative aligns creative technological solutions with real ground operation requirements.
Hassan El-Houry, Executive Chairman of Menzies Aviation, stated the full acquisition is a natural advancement of its Portuguese strategy, enabling greater investment and innovation to deliver consistent high-standard services and drive sustainable aviation development in the region.
Group CEO Philipp Joeinig added that full ownership brings enhanced strategic agility, cementing Menzies’ standing as a trusted partner for local airports and airlines, with a core focus on safe, premium operations and long-term value for customers and staff alike.
