Recently, Oakland Airport (OAK) officially incorporated its first batch of fully electric shuttle buses into its parking shuttle fleet, marking a crucial step forward in the airport's efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable development in transportation. The five electric buses, provided by RIDE, will primarily serve the airport's passenger and employee parking lots, offering a green and convenient shuttle service to travelers and staff.
Craig Simon, the head of the aviation department of Auckland Airport, said at the launch ceremony, "We are very excited to welcome this batch of clean and environmentally friendly new electric shuttle buses to Auckland Airport. In the coming years, we will continue to advance the electrification of our fleet and gradually achieve the goal of fully electric shuttle buses." He particularly emphasized that passengers and staff taking these advanced buses will be able to experience a modern riding environment that is free of exhaust emissions, quiet, spacious and comfortable.
As the first batch of fully electric buses to be put into operation at Oakland Airport, the launch of these five vehicles marks not only an environmental milestone for the airport itself but also helps it precisely align with California's vehicle electrification regulations. Currently, all other shuttle buses at Oakland Airport are powered by renewable natural gas (RNG), and the introduction of these electric buses lays the foundation for the full electrification of the fleet in the future. According to the plan, the airport will continue to promote the electrification of its shuttle fleet over the next ten years, ultimately achieving 100% zero-emission shuttle services.
To highlight the environmental friendliness of the vehicles, all these electric buses are painted with a special livery exclusive to Auckland Airport, prominently showcasing the core advantage of being fully electric and zero-emission. Notably, these livery designs were custom-made by Chen Design Agency, a local firm based in Auckland, which not only conveys the environmental message but also incorporates regional design elements.
The procurement of this new type of electric bus and the construction of the supporting charging facilities have received support from multiple special grants. The sources of funds cover three core funding projects: approximately 1.5 million US dollars from the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Program of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); 600,000 US dollars in funding from the California Air Resources Board's Hybrid and Zero-Emission Vehicle Incentive Program (HVIP); and nearly 600,000 US dollars from the California Energy Commission's Zero Emission Project Energy Infrastructure Incentive Program (EnergIIZE). The multiple sources of funding provide a solid guarantee for the airport's green transformation.
