Swissport is investing heavily in green technologies to hit its target of a 55% electric Ground Support Equipment (GSE) fleet by 2032 and boost renewable energy adoption across its operations. Over the past 18 months, the company has procured more than 1,000 hybrid and electric GSE vehicles, deploying them across 28 countries. Warwick Brady, President and CEO of Swissport International, emphasized that this eco-tech investment underscores the firm’s industry-leading stance on sustainability and innovation, noting that the goal is to build the world’s largest electric GSE fleet in the next five years while supporting airline customers’ climate objectives by curbing global supply chain emissions.
The rollout of electric GSE has seen significant progress, with electric units already accounting for 25% of Swissport’s global fleet, especially at key European hubs. Operations in Switzerland are on track to hit 55% eGSE usage by late 2025, with Zurich at 43%, Basel at 51% and Geneva at 59%. All support vehicles at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol have been fully electric since February 2025, and the eGSE fleet has doubled at London’s four major airports—Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted. To ensure smooth deployment, Swissport has partnered with top-tier manufacturers via long-term agreements, securing stable equipment availability, consistent quality and optimal operational performance, while also collaborating with airport authorities to develop supporting infrastructure like charging stations and power supply optimization systems.
Beyond eGSE expansion, Swissport is ramping up renewable energy utilization across its facilities. Cargo warehouses in Barcelona and Madrid now run entirely on renewable energy, cutting annual CO2 emissions by 305 tons. A 100kW solar grid installed in Nairobi back in 2017 powers 35-40% of the energy needs for the city’s perishable cold rooms, and Frankfurt’s warehouse boasts the airport’s largest photovoltaic system, generating over 1.5 million kWh of solar power annually. These sustainability efforts have earned Swissport the distinction of being the only global aviation services provider to receive Platinum status from EcoVadis, the leading platform for evaluating corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.
