The air cargo handling volume at Vienna Airport reached 141,118 tons from January to June this year, an increase of 20,861 tons compared to the same period last year. The volume of pharmaceutical cargo increased by 8.2% year-on-year, with an increase of 1,825 tons. The cargo volume continued to grow in July, handling 24,808 tons, a year-on-year increase of 21.1%, which was 12% higher than the pre-pandemic level in 2019.
The improvement in cargo volume is attributed to the increase in passenger volume at the airport, which has released more capacity for cargo in the belly hold. The cargo volume in the belly hold increased by 47% year-on-year in the first half of 2024, reaching 57,594 tons.
Julian Jäger, the joint CEO and Chief Operating Officer of Vienna Airport, said that the excellent development trend of cargo volume is reflected in the data for July 2024, which has exceeded the pre-pandemic level in 2019. This confirms the effectiveness of the airport's strategy of focusing on innovative logistics solutions, first-class infrastructure and high-quality handling services, and also strengthens the airport's position as a global core hub for air cargo. Michael Zach, the Senior Vice President of Ground Services and Cargo Operations at the airport, said that the development in the second quarter continued the good performance since the beginning of the year. The demand for routes in North America and Asia was strong, and the airport had the superior conditions for efficient and reliable handling of incremental cargo. The demand for the pharmaceutical cargo center also continued to rise, and the airport was ready to welcome further growth.
