The Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has officially launched a brand-new eastern aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) station. This renovation project has an overall investment of over 130 million US dollars and is the core component of the airport's DFW Forward upgrade plan. The new site replaces two old fire stations that have been in operation for over 50 years. The overall fire optimization plan integrates the original four fire stations into two centralized stations in the east and west. The western fire station is expected to be completed by the second half of this year. The project received over 75 million US dollars in federal funds support and was constructed by JE Dunn Construction and PGAL in a design and construction integrated model. As the fourth busiest passenger airport in the world and the third in terms of flight take-offs and landings, this infrastructure upgrade will significantly enhance the airport's emergency coverage capabilities and operational resilience.
This newly-built ARFF fire station is equipped with 10 fire vehicle parking spaces that can be quickly dispatched, 21 duty dormitories, a training and fitness area, as well as dedicated functional spaces for handling hazardous materials and decontamination. The building complies with the ICC-500 standard and features an F5-level storm-resistant shelter area to ensure uninterrupted emergency operations even in extreme weather conditions. The vehicle dispatch efficiency has significantly improved, enabling multiple vehicles to be dispatched simultaneously and shortening the response time for runway emergencies. The airport management stated that safety is the core foundation of airport operations. As the airport's annual passenger volume is expected to reach 100 million in the future, this round of hardware investment can meet the various emergency response needs under the high-density operation of a super-large airport.
In addition to the construction of the fire station, DFW is also simultaneously advancing the upgrade of the entire emergency response system: introducing hybrid new fire vehicles that can accelerate faster and are compatible with non-chlorine-containing fire foam, thereby reducing the time it takes to reach various areas of the airport; investing nearly 3 million US dollars to build an integrated mobile command cabin, which has the ability to operate independently for a long time and conduct cross-departmental real-time coordination and dispatching. The upgrade of the entire emergency infrastructure, vehicles and command system not only strengthens the airport's own security level, but also lays a solid foundation for the long-term expansion and development of this aviation hub and the overall emergency coordination capabilities of the North Texas region.
