Turkish ground support equipment (GSE) manufacturer Timsan offers a comprehensive range of five passenger stair types, including towable, self-propelled, electric, solar-powered, and truck-mounted units. These products are engineered to accommodate a wide range of aircraft, from regional jets requiring boarding heights as low as 1.7 meters to the largest wide-body aircraft with access points up to 8.4 meters.
According to Haldun Aksoy, Chairman of the Board at Timsan, the company’s towable passenger stairs continue to be the most in-demand, particularly at smaller airports, where they offer the “optimum solution” in terms of both cost and operational flexibility. Currently, towable units account for 70% of Timsan’s passenger boarding equipment sales, with self-propelled models representing 20% and truck-mounted versions making up the remaining 10%.
Despite the growing push for electrification in the industry, diesel-powered units remain the preferred choice among Timsan’s clients. “Diesel is still the most popular,” Aksoy states, citing reliability and familiarity as key factors.
That said, solar-powered stairs have found a strong foothold in sunnier regions, where operators value their energy efficiency and lower operating costs. Aksoy notes that these units have become “very popular” at such stations due to their overall cost-effectiveness.
When asked how Timsan is evolving to meet changing industry demands — such as sustainability, automation, and smart technology integration — Aksoy emphasizes the company’s commitment to innovation:
“With over 42 years of expertise in GSE manufacturing, we continuously adapt our products to meet evolving customer needs. Our goal is to deliver solutions that strike the right balance between cost efficiency, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.”
All of Timsan’s passenger boarding equipment features dual control systems — a traditional system alongside a modern CAN bus system, which was introduced in 2020 to enhance reliability and diagnostics.
Additionally, aircraft safe approach systems (ASAS) have been standard across all Timsan mobile stairs since 2014, providing operators with enhanced safety during aircraft approach. The company has also developed a custom approach mechanism integrated with a hydraulic drive system, specifically tailored to ensure maximum safety for towable stair operations.
